In a sad and somber update to a story we brought you last month, the village of Kenaston and many family and friends are mourning the loss of long-time local hockey player and coach, Dean Blenkinsop.
The social media page of the Kenaston Blizzards hockey team shared the news of Dean’s passing on Thursday, December 7.
Blenkinsop, who lived with cancer for nearly a decade, graced the front page of the November 2 issue of The Outlook after the Blizzards honoured him with a special ceremony on Saturday, October 28 before an exhibition game, retiring his #10 jersey number and thanking him for his leadership, friendship, and his many contributions to the team.
On that night, Dean was visibly humbled by the gesture, but also in great spirits, speaking to this reporter before the ceremony about his condition, his experiences on the ice, and his love for the game of hockey. Our conversation wasn’t long, but it was easy to see what people liked about him.
Many who knew Blenkinsop for many years described him as a pillar of the local hockey community, and the Hawarden native was instrumental in helping the Kenaston team thrive through his leadership both on and off the ice.
Before their December 9 home game against Beechy, the Blizzards held a moment of silence in memory of their departed player, coach and friend.
Dean was 46 years old, and on Wednesday, December 13, many gathered for a celebration of his life that was held at Kenaston Place.
The Outlook expresses its deepest condolences to Blenkinsop’s family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time.
