Home Hardware Growing & Giving Food

Veggies being grown for food bank, seniors

A long-time community-minded Outlook business decided this spring and summer to maximize some unused space that they had and help give the gift of food.

For the past few months, Richards Home Hardware has been growing cucumbers, zucchini, carrots and beets in the enclosed outdoor cement pad located behind the store, with the help of a partnership with Scotts Canada and Miracle Gro, and now their crop is starting to go out into the community to help feed those who want fresh vegetables, including deliveries to the Golden Acres Hi-Rise and an upcoming drop-off to the Outlook & District Food Bank.

Nicole Richards of Home Hardware says it was really just a question of ‘Why not?’ as far as utilizing the unused space and growing the veggies, and that the gesture was all about providing to those in the community who may not have access to fresh produce.  With this being the first year that the store has gone into the ‘veggie business’, they hope to continue doing so next year and may even look into diversifying their crop.
