Grade Six Folkfest Shows Cultural Diversity

Gym turns into showcase of countries and customs

Leave it to the youngest generation to show us how we should all respect and get to know the different cultures, customs and traditions of various countries and nations around the globe.

The Grade 6 students of Outlook High School, stemming from Social Studies class, hosted their annual Folkfest event on Thursday, November 16, turning the gymnasium into a multicultural venue that spotlighted the Congo, Finland, Cuba, the Ukraine, the Dominican Republic, Guyana, Brazil, Portugal, Ireland, Haiti, Chile, France, Spain, Scotland, the Netherlands, Iceland, the Bahamas, and South Africa.

With a passport in hand, visitors could tour around the gym and take in each presentation, talking to the students about what they learned in relation to each nation’s culture and way of life, including the political landscape, geography, climate, ethnic foods and sports and recreation.

The kids seemed to be proud of their work and enjoyed talking with Folkfest goers about the different countries and peoples that they studied, putting a spotlight on cultural diversity and showing that life is unique and interesting in other parts of the world.
