One of the first two deaths from COVID-19 in Saskatchewan was an individual from just outside the Battlefords area.

The individual was Alice Grove, 75. Her name was made public Tuesday morning on John Gormley’s radio show. The news was also confirmed by Eleanor Widdowson, who was identified on Gormley's show as Grove’s sister.

“People of North Battleford if you are out and about. Please be aware there was a death in this fair city from COVID19,” she stated on Facebook.

The News-Optimist is able to independently confirm that Grove died at Battlefords Union Hospital in North Battleford, where she had tested positive for COVID-19.

Health officials with the province have not confirmed that information, however, out of privacy concerns.

To this point, the province has not listed specific locations of individual cases of COVID-19 in the province. However, the latest numbers from the province show 37 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the North region, which includes numbers from the Battlefords and surrounding area.
