As the latest regarding job sanctions within the Saskatchewan Teachers Federation continues to unfold, the Sun West School Division released the following memo:

Dear Parents & Guardians:

You may be aware that the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation (STF) is currently engaged in contract negotiations with the Government Trustee Bargaining Committee. This involves all Sun West teachers, principals, vice-principals and teacher certificated personnel.

On March 9, 2020 the STF announced that effective March 12, 2020 all STF members will “commence a restriction of services provincewide action that will continue until further notice”. The STF website further stipulates:

➢STF members are to report to school and provide professional services no earlier than 15 minutes prior to the start of the school day and no later than 15 minutes after the conclusion of the school day;

➢Members will continue to provide student supervision, such as recess, lunch break and bus supervision, within the time frame mentioned above; and,

➢There is to be no provision of voluntary or extracurricular services during the sanction period.

As a result of this restriction of services by the STF, Sun West School Division schools will be:

Cancelling extracurricular activities, which may include practices, games, tournaments, drama, music related activities and school clubs;

➢Activities such as graduations and our Student Leadership Conference may still take place supervised by non STF members;

➢For students who are not transported by Sun West buses, please ensure that students do not arrive any earlier than 15 minutes before school and that they be prepared to leave no later than 15 minutes after school;

➢We anticipate there being no disruption to the supervision of students during recess and lunch break times.

We respect the collective bargaining rights of all Sun West employees. For the time being and, unless otherwise advised, all classes and curricular activities will continue as scheduled. Our focus is always on student safety and in the event of job action, minimizing disruption to student learning.

If we have any information or changes to school operations that you need to know about, we will share with families as quickly as possible. We will share information through a variety of means including current and important updates on our website, www.sunwestsd.ca, on school websites as well as on our Twitter account, @SunWestSD207. In the event of sudden changes that you need to know about we will use our emergency telephone and text notification system. Thank you for your patience and cooperation during these negotiation times.

Sincerely,
Dr. Guy G. Tetrault
