Football: Bisons Beat Bulldogs, Enter Playoffs

LCBI hopes to ride momentum after regular season

The LCBI Bisons football team has enjoyed some prosperity out on the field lately, racking up wins against Gull Lake and Central Butte, and the team hopes that momentum will stay with them as they enter into the 1A playoffs this coming Saturday.

Before that though, LCBI played host to the Central Butte Bulldogs on Friday afternoon, October 12, a rematch from October 4 played on the Bulldogs’ home turf.

Much like that game, the field pretty much belonged to the Bisons.

In the first quarter, Central Butte was the first to get on the scoreboard with a touchdown made at the 10:54 mark by #7 Carl Martel, convert no good.  From that point on in this chunk of time, momentum belonged to LCBI as #4 Kal Berggren nabbed a touchdown at 8:06, running it through impressively, convert no good.  The Bisons kept it up with another TD at 6:50, made by #8 Justin Morken as he caught a solid pass, convert no good.  Morken further impressed the fans in the stands by doing it again at 3:35, making a long dash on a great pass to nab a TD, convert no good.

The second quarter saw the Bulldogs mount something of a comeback as they nabbed a touchdown at the 11:18 mark, convert no good.  Central Butte was showing good fire by making a number of nice catches, too.  Unfortunately, an injury to Bulldogs #13 Tyler Hill at 7:49 wound up serving as a shift of momentum back over to LCBI.  At the 4:04 mark, Bisons #1 Brody Holmlund-McLeod made a fantastic catch and tore down the field from the opposite end to make a touchdown, convert no good.  To close the first half, LCBI #3 Cole Chubak made a touchdown with just 11 seconds left, convert no good.

The third quarter belonged squarely to the host team, as LCBI #4 Berggren wowed spectators by evading multiple tackle attempts to make a touchdown at the 11:33 mark, convert good.  The majority of the quarter went back and forth as far as momentum, but the Bisons kept things up at the 3:38 mark when #4 Berggren made another long dash to nab another touchdown, convert good.  Berggren, LCBI’s quarterback, would end up nabbing one more touchdown to close the quarter, convert good.

The fourth quarter saw Central Butte show signs of life as they held the Bisons at bay for most of the time, slowing things down in these final twelve minutes.  The final touchdown of this game was made at the 2:18 mark by LCBI #69 Ricki Lockhart, convert no good.  In the end, the final score of this rainy, muddy affair was 57-12 in favor of LCBI, giving the Bisons a commanding win.

With the end of the regular season, things now switch over to playoffs for the 1A Conference, where the teams ranked 1st and 4th will do battle, as will the teams ranked 2nd and 3rd.

This coming Saturday afternoon, LCBI will play host to the Gull Lake Lions in playoff action between 2nd Place and 3rd Place.
