It’s been close to three decades since the town of Outlook has had a senior baseball team.
That changed on Monday evening, May 28 as the newly-formed Outlook River Hawks took to Diamond #3 at the Jim Kook Rec Plex to host the Kindersley Klippers. The home opener festivities kicked off at 5:30 with a BBQ supper courtesy of AG Foods, along with RBC staff, and sales throughout the evening were in support of the new swimming pool facility in Outlook.
The action itself kicked off at 6:30 and from the get-go, both teams were impressive and momentum shifted to each roster throughout the game.
The River Hawks showed that they’ve been practicing and preparing for this rebirth of senior baseball in Outlook, and it was Jeff Lee who cracked the first hit of the year for his team, who also proceeded to steal second and third base.
Also notable throughout the action was the cannon of an arm on Outlook’s Tanner Prentice, who spent some time pitching during the game. Perhaps also of note was the ‘unofficial’ theme song of Mark Langager; the theme from TV’s ‘Cops’, which got a few chuckles from the sizable crowd in attendance as Outlook’s RCMP sergeant took to the plate.
After the Hawks managed to tie things up at 9-9 after the third, Outlook managed to move ahead and then maintain the lead over the Klippers.
In the end, the River Hawks were victorious over Kindersley at a score of 16-14, ensuring that the first senior men’s ball game in Outlook after 28 years at least ended on a positive note.
The next home game for Outlook takes place on Sunday, June 3 at 1:00 pm when the team hosts the Oyen Eagles, followed by another home game on Wednesday, June 6 at 7:00 as the Kindersley Cubs come to town.
