Bubble season sees Outlook-area native in net for debuting Toronto squad

The NHL season may have just started last week, but if local hockey fans are looking for some action that also has an Outlook connection, they may want to check out the National Women’s Hockey League.

The NHL season may have just started last week, but if local hockey fans are looking for some action that also has an Outlook connection, they may want to check out the National Women’s Hockey League.

Word came down this week that the NWHL will have a two-week ‘bubble season’ taking place from January 23 to February 5, emanating from the 1980 Rink-Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, New York.  This includes the 2021 Isobel Cup Championship playoffs.

Suiting up and hitting the ice for these upcoming games will be the local area’s own Samantha Ridgewell, manning the post in goal.  The 24-year old Ridgewell, who grew up on a farm near Conquest and took some schooling at LCBI, plays for the Toronto Six squad, competing as the only player from Saskatchewan.  The Toronto team makes its debut this season as the newest NWHL expansion franchise, the first Canadian team to join the league.

Toronto’s season begins this Saturday, January 23 at 1:00 PM EST against the Metropolitan Riveters, followed by a game the next day at the same time against the Minnesota Whitecaps.  From there, Toronto plays the Boston Pride on January 26 at 8:30 PM EST, the Buffalo Beauts on January 28 at 5:30 PM EST, and finally a game against the Connecticut Whale on January 30 at Noon EST.

For those looking to watch Ridgewell and her team, all the games will be available to watch for free online by logging on to twitch.tv/nwhl.

Following the regular season games, the Isobel Cup Semifinals and Final over February 4 and 5 will be broadcast live by NBC Sports on NBCSN.

We wish Samantha and her Toronto team all the best during the action from right here at home in Outlook!
